LANGKAWI
History : Langkawis name is believed to have originated from the abundance of eagles on the island and the geological wonder of its landscape. By putting together helang (eagle in Malay) and kawi (marble in Sanskrit), you get the moniker helang-kawi which was eventually toned down to Langkawi.

Location : On the northwestern shore of Malaysia is the archipelago of the Langkawi islands. Situated just where the Indian Ocean narrows down into the Straits of Melaka. Langkawi, a cluster of 99 islands separated from mainland Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca.
Area : The largest island of Langkawi itself, measuring about 478.5 sq km, is the only one with any real settlement.
Climate : Sunny, hot and humid, tropical climate with an average annual temperature of about 32 degrees Celsius. The rainy season is during August / September, although there are occasional showers throughout the year.
Time difference : 8H ahead of GMT and 16H ahead of US Pacific Standard Time.

Duty Free Goods : Foreign nationals visiting Malaysia for 48 hours or less receive a duty exemption for the purchase of souvenirs, gifts and items intended for personal use up to a limit of RM500. There is a duty-free limit for certain types of items: booze (up to one litre), tobacco (up to 225g, or 200 cigarettes), one pair of leather footwear, new clothing (up to three pieces), as well as cosmetics and personal hygiene items (not including powder or hair products).
Population : The population is an estimated 54,000 of which 90% are Malays. The other ethic groups consist mainly of Chinese, Indians and Thais.
Language : Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin and Tamil. English is widelyspoken.
Religion : Islam is the official religion. Other religions are freely practised too.
Dress Code : Visitors are reminded to respect the local culture and to be properly attired when in public. Visitors are requested to avoid walking in public (town/village) in swimsuit or sunbathe topless or nude.
By Air : Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and Air Asia operate daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. International travelers from certain places such as Osaka, Taipei and London can connect with MAS flights directly from their country or other airlines, depending on their availability in that particular region. Air Asia is the airborne version of a cheap local minibus, so you cant go wrong if youre looking for a good deal without the frills. Visitors from Singapore can use Silk Air which also flies directly to Langkawi daily.

By Road - For those who are driving from KL, Johor, Singapore and other places on mainland, you choose the nearest Jetty Terminal. There are signboards indicating the junctions to get off the highway, after reaching Kedah, look for the sign "Alor Setar Selatan" and "Langkawi". After reaching Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, you may park your car at the private car park which will cost around RM 6 - 8 per day. Vehicle can only be brought over to Langkawi via cargo vessel (at RM 160.00 return) which eill take 1 night to cross over, meaning the vehicle cam only by retrieve the next day at Langkawi Port (Tanjung Lembung).
Form Singapore, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, there're buses running daily to Alor Setar / Kuala Kedah. Please contact local bus operators for more information. There's another option is by train, KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) which start it's journey from Singapore interchange at Kuala Lumpur all the way down to Alor Star Train Station and Arau. From Alor Setar Train Station to Kuala Kedah Jetty Terminal with taxi (RM 16.00). Form Arau to Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal with taxi (RM 12.00).
